In the State of South Dakota apostilles can be obtained from the office of Jason M. Grant, the South Dakota Secretary of State in Pierre.
Documents submitted for apostille in South Dakota need to comply with the following guidelines:
- In order to apostille birth, death and marriage certificates you need original certified copies issued by the State Department of Health or the County Register of Deeds.
- To obtain apostille for corporate documents, articles of incorporation, bylaws or other business documents, they must be notarized by a South Dakota Notary Public in good standing and a current commission.
- Academic documents such as diplomas and transcripts need to have the notarized signature of the school registrar.
- Notarized documents acceptable for apostille must include the original South Dakota Notary Public signature, notarial stamp and statement.

Copies of vital records can be obtained from the Register of Deeds from the originating county or from the State Department of Health (phone 605-773-4961)
